The way we travel has changed. We no longer want a generic, one-size-fits-all vacation. We want to disconnect from the everyday, to explore on our terms, and immerse ourselves in the local culture. We no longer want to simply witness nature—we want to live in it.
Camping is a wonderful way of discovering Taos and the surrounding mountains, lakes, and rivers. Established campsites abound in the beautiful Carson National Forest where you can pop your tent, light a fire (make sure to check fire restrictions!), and get your s’mores on. Campsites and picnic shelters are also available up and down the Rio Grande River, with some excellent river access from sites just south of Taos near the town of Pilar. Bring along your fishing gear and wave to the boatloads of rafters and kayakers as they paddle by.
If you like your camping experience a little more upscale, check out the glamping scene in Taos. Head to ancient Chaco Canyon under the full moon or take in the brilliant night sky above Taos without leaving behind your creature comforts—like luxurious bedding and an on-site chef to prepare sumptuous meals. Or you might settle into your own private tipi complete with a queen bed and cedarwood hot tub; as long as you’re outdoors, it’s still camping to us!
Travelers who come to Taos with their home on their back—or at least the back of their truck—will find a wide variety of RV campsites. Whether you choose a site surrounded by seas of sagebrush, one cozied into a nook right in town, or one nestled into the foothills of the Sangre de Cristos, you’re bound to feel at home in Taos.
