for the health of it

June bugs aside, in Taos, Mid-summer means For The Health Of It.

This summer, celebrating their 8th annual event and their biggest fund-raiser of the year, Holy Cross Hospital’s Cancer Support Services are going all out, to top their prior efforts in raising money (and awareness) about Cancer’s impact on our community.

All of us have been touched both directly and indirectly by what I call the Plague of Civilization, because as my oncologist succinctly put it at our first meeting, “Cancer doesn’t discriminate.”

This year, along with moving the event to Kit Carson Park, Cancer Support Services will post a memorial “Love Quilt” in tomorrow’s issue of The Taos News. Each $25 donation that was made (per name of person included on the quilt), will provide non-medical services to help improve the quality of life for people with cancer and their families in the Taos community.

Cancer Support Services has also opened an account in partnership with Becky Holsinger at Pieces, to which consignments can be donated. All proceeds from the sale of those items will benefit Cancer Support Services.

On Saturday, June 23rd from 9-12. All participants should meet at Kit Carson Park. (Registration is ongoing, and open the day of at 8 am. Registration is $35, includes an event T-shirt.),

There are existent teams, and you can form a team, maybe in honor of someone close who is currently on their own cancer journey.

The event consists of 3 laps around the Park, .85 miles per lap. There will be lap awards, a prize for completion of each lap. Upon completion of the third lap, participants get a raffle ticket.

Tickets are also available for purchase. The raffle includes prizes from El Monte Segrado, Vapour Beauty, The Gorge,Tea-o-graphy and many more. Private Label Select and Pepsi have also donated lap awards.

There will be vendor booths, a bake sale and live music from Vic Hennegan and Jimmy Stadler. Cancer Support Services have gone all out to make this event one to remember.

“All ages (and dogs), are welcome. The event is a walk, though running is not discouraged.” Said Susan Strong of HCCSS, when we talked last week. “We just want everyone to come out and have a good time while supporting this very worthy cause.”

“It will be a leisurely Saturday family affair from 9am -12pm with a walking course, live music, food and display tables of our sponsoring vendors.” she continued. “Jimmy Stadler is playing from 10:30 -11:30 and is donating his time.”

“We will also have a bake sale and Freshies will sell healthy drinks.” She added.

It promises to be a fun event for all ages, that also educates and raises the level of awareness about the disease and how in impacts both individuals battling it, along with the community at large.

“One of my objectives has been to make this event educational as well, especially in regards to the variety of restorative therapies available to our community.“ Susan explained. “ We already have several vendors signed up, bringing display tables to help illustrate their discussions about what they do.”

HCCSS provide so much for so many in Taos, this is a great way to get involved with life affirming acts of love and kindness; a way of giving back to the community that helps us all continue to pay it forward.
