You made your way here to Taos, at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, on the edge of the mesa. Step out of the fast lane, emerge from the chaos of the city, find your own center and renew your spirit. Take a few days — or better yet, a week — and discover wellness in a land celebrated for its culture, food, healers, landscapes, architecture and artists.
Recharge your senses through fresh, wholesome food and drink. Restore your equilibrium through yoga, tai chi and chi gong. Relax in one of our world-class spas. Come get rejuvenated by our natural beauty.
Manzanita Market, a health-conscious market cafe, sources its food from local “organic and biodynamic farmers and ranchers.” Try their blueberry blue corn pancakes or chorizo migas for breakfast. Enjoy a salad and a selection of sandwiches — including the mediterranean vegan or hot ham and brie for lunch. Indulge your sweet tooth with a house-made pastry or a scoop of their ice cream, infused with fruit, mint or handmade caramel. Afterward, stroll over to Tea.O.Graphy and sample one of their artisanal crafted teas. Sooth your body with an herbal mix, such as High Desert Sage or The Cat’s Pajamas; perk up with a green tea blend, like Fleurs de Provence; or get a lift sipping one of their black teas: Forest Floor, Sandia Rose or my favorite, Lavender Grey. Purchase loose leaf tea to take home. Browse their selection of gift items, including reusable tea sachets and locally thrown clay mugs by Clay Mavens.
Located in the heart of Taos, Shree Yoga Taos welcomes students of all ages (kids’ yoga on Wednesdays) and experience levels to get on the mat. Instructors facilitate morning, evening and noon hour (only $8!) yoga classes every day. On the south side of Taos, AuraFitness offers tai chi, chi gong, yoga and fitness classes, along with personal training. Each Sunday yoga class is by donation and proceeds go to different organizations that serve the community. Both studios host regular workshops and other special events.
Revel in the day spa experience or stay in the sumptuous lodgings of El Monte Sagrado —close to the center of Taos — or mountainside at The Blake in Taos Ski Valley. The unique El Monte Sagrado eco-resort centers around The Living Spa, with an atrium where guests can lounge and treatment rooms that are partially temperature-regulated by an indoor waterfall. Enjoy a wide range of treatments, from massages, wraps, facials, manicures and pedicures to private soaks. The luxurious Spa & Wellness Center at The Blake features an extensive menu of massages, facials, body treatments and an oxygen bar. Both resorts have a hot tub and a pool in which to cool off.
Close to Taos are two amazing outdoor experiences. Discover Italianos Canyon (Trail 59) on Highway 150 on the way to Taos Ski Valley. This high-alpine wonderland is resplendent with wildflowers through late summer and provides views of the surrounding peaks and valley. This trail has multiple water crossings made easier by stepping stones and log bridges. Pass through aspens, pines and an open meadow on your way to the ridge line. Black Rock Hot Springs, tucked into the basalt walls of the adjacent river that carved the Rio Grande Gorge, has several pools for a clothing-optional soak. For those seeking an authentic Taos adventure, find the trailhead up the hill after you’ve crossed the John Dunn bridge. Be sure to bring a light if you’re there past dark.
These are just a few of the places and ways by which you can find your well-being in Taos. We invite you to come here to recharge, restore, relax and rejuvenate. Taos combines breathtaking vistas, eclectic healing modalities, nourishment to satisfy your taste buds and nose, and the ability to slow down to the pace of mañana.
