Taos is Art Lamppost Banner Competition

Town of Taos partnership with Taos Arts Council

If you live in Taos, or are a regular visitor, you may notice that something looks a bit different downtown from year to year. Since 2018, the Town of Taos and the Taos Arts Council has put out a “Taos is Art” call to our bountiful community of artists to decorate historic downtown Taos with their work. Every year, a select group of Taos artists sees their work transformed into banners to adorn lampposts throughout town.

This yearly campaign supports the abundant creativity of artists in Taos in a variety of media from painting and photography to sculpture, jewelry and performing arts. It gives visibility to those artists who may not normally receive representation, beautifies the historic district of Taos, and welcomes visitors with a visual expression of what Taos is all about: Taos is art.

Call to Artists

Beginning February 1 thru March 11, 2022, Taos Arts Council will be taking entries for the Taos is Art banner competition. All entries must be submitted though the CaFE website: https://artist.callforentry.org/festivals_unique_info.php?ID=10075

Traffic Signal Box Art Program

Town of Taos partnership with Taos MainStreet

The Town of Taos and Downtown Taos MainStreet are partnering to develop and implement a “Traffic Signal Box Art Program.” This initiative is designed to enhance and beautify the community landscape, primarily within the commercial and historical areas, by adding works of art to the surfaces of traffic utility boxes that are often targeted by graffiti vandals. Artwork on the traffic signal boxes will function as a form of communication to a moving audience with the goal of beautifying the community. The program will involve high school students designing original artwork for traffic signal boxes located within the town and will serve as an outdoor “gallery.” The individual boxes may vary in theme and technique depending on the artist, but as the program is throughout the Town of Taos, it will become a dynamic art installation in itself.

Call to Artists

Calling on all high school students in Taos County. Submit your two-dimensional design (any medium) by March 31, 2022. The theme is “New Mexico True”. Winners will be selected to have their design professionally reproduced and installed on a traffic signal box in the Town of Taos. All submissions will be approved by the NM Department of Transportation. Email submissions to [email protected], or fill out the online form here or call 505-305-3905 to drop art by the Taos MainStreet office. Good luck!
