Parts of the Carson National Forest are Temporarily Closing

The Carson National Forest near Taos closes the Wheeler Peak, Williams Lake, and surrounding high-elevation trail areas from August 21 through August 28, 2026, for annual local traditional and cultural ceremonies.

Affected Trails and Areas

  • Williams Lake Trail (#62)
  • Wheeler Peak Trail (#90) between La Cal Basin and the peak
  • Wheeler Summit Trail (#67)
  • Lost Lake Trail (#91) between Horseshoe Lake and Wheeler Peak
  • Bull of the Woods Trail (portions)
  • Williams Lake Basin, including Kachina and Lake Fork peaks

Reopening Date

  • The entire restricted area reopens to the public on August 29, 2026.
