Itineraries & Workshops
In 2012, Taos celebrates the women who have helped make Taos, well, TAOS. A century ago, special places like Taos were sought out by those of adventurous spirit, particularly strong, creative women. Two such iconic women who sought and found freedom in Taos were artists Agnes Martin and Beatrice Mandelman, both born in 1912. To celebrate them and dozens of other remarkable women, both historic and current, the Taos community will host a series of special events in 2012. Find an exhibitions calendar at TAOS.org/rwt_exhibits. And consider following one of these itineraries (all are PDF files) that will introduce you to places these women called home:

Workshops
Meetings with Remarkable Women
Mabel Dodge Luhan House
June 1 with departure June 3
Drawing from the lives of the remarkable women of Taos, both historic and contemporary, this workshop uses Taos as a focal point to explore a number of questions. Who are the remarkable women of Taos and what makes them remarkable? What about Taos over the decades has provided such a supportive environment for strong, independent-minded women? What constitutes “remarkable” and what community characteristics help and hinder that growth?
The workshop opens Friday with a salon-style evening with the topic “Mabel Dodge Luhan and Georgia O’Keeffe: What fostered their growth and what hindered it?” Based on written records left by these two remarkable women, Mabel’s biographer Lois Rudnick and Canadian poet Kate Braid will briefly examine the social and cultural forces at work in the lives of Mabel and Georgia, then open a salon to the participants. Over the weekend, led by a panel moderated by Lois, we will discuss these topics, write about influences on our own lives, and have the opportunity to explore Taos and encounter a variety of women whose lives have contributed to the community in multiple ways.” On Sunday “Breakfast with Mabel” closes the workshop. Seriousness will be moderated with laughter, storytelling and gourmet meals.
Workshop fee: $250, includes an evening reception, lunch and two dinners. (Space is limited: workshop can accommodate 60; Mabel Dodge Luhan House has 19 rooms available for double or single occupancy.)
