X-country & Snowshoeing
Top on the list of places to slide, glide and step is Enchanted Forest Cross-country Ski Area in the Carson National Forest, New Mexico's only full service cross-country ski and snowshoe area, offering 33km of wide, groomed trails for both classic and freestyle skiing and 15km of trails for snowshoers. There are even trails designated for just you and your dog! Plus access to miles and miles of backcountry trails. Location: 3 miles east of Red River, NM on NM Highway 38; about 45 minutes from Taos.
Angel Fire Resort sports a sweet Nordic Center with 11.5km of terrain distributed across 3 trails. One beginner, one intermediate, one advanced.
Locals head to Brazos to play in the powder, about 80 miles west of Taos in the Chama Valley Region. The amazing cliffs and crisp air are well worth the drive.
Closer to town, try the West Rim Trail that starts in the parking lot of the Rio Grande Gorge Visitor Center in Taos, 15 minutes out on Rte. 64 (just south over the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge). Ten miles of flat terrain with fantastic views of El Salto and Taos Mountain and wildlife sightings.
