Author Discusses Socialite Millicent Rogers’ Search for Beauty on April 15
TAOS, NM — Author and speaker Cherie Burns will speak about the remarkable oil heiress Millicent Rogers at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 15 at the Millicent Rogers Museum in Taos as part of the Art of the Dress exhibition and Remarkable Women of Taos theme.
Burns is the author of Searching for Beauty – a fascinating biography about fashion icon, socialite and Standard Oil heiress, Millicent Rogers, whose high-society lifestyle made her an intriguing character and a remarkable contributor to the legacy and history of Taos.
“I think Rogers' ability to reinvent herself over and over again is what modern women relate to about her - perhaps her most remarkable reinvention was in Taos, New Mexico,” said Burns.“Taos was an unlikely place for her to end up. Yet in Taos, she was able to find resolution to her life and to popularize southwestern style on her own terms. She had an unerring knack for mixing unrefined elements with her couturier clothes. Everything she did was distinctly personal; the clothes were merely an expression of who she was, not an end in themselves.”
Burns exposes how the affluent, influential Rogers was always surrounded by wealth and glamour, appearing in Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. She was also linked to famous people such as Clark Gable. Yet, Rogers was drawn to the simplicity and creative energy of Taos, where she found a new spiritual life and popularized the southwestern style. For the first time during her presentation, Burns will share fashion images of Rogers including dozens of photos of her popular dresses.
Along with the Searching for Beauty presentation, the Millicent Rogers Museum will also host an exhibition titled Millicent Rogers and Her Circle, from June 1 through Sept. 9. A special collection of Roger’s jewelry and textiles are on exhibit now through April 15. However, a permanent collection of her textiles, jewelry, pottery, kachinas, and basketry is on exhibit year-round at the Millicent Rogers Museum, located at 1504 Millicent Rogers Rd in Taos.
Seven Directions tour company is also offering a docent-led tour of the Millicent Rogers Museum and private dinner. The tour is part of the a customized “Remarkable Women of Taos and Northern NM” experience in Taos. For more information, visit taos.org/women/itineraries-workshops.
