Taos Grand Art Weekend celebrates Decades of Fine Arts, Culture and Live Music

Taos, NM --- AUGUST 29, 2011 – Taos is one of the communities that has more artists per capita than any most locations in the world, and widely known as the first True Art Colony in the nation created by the Taos Society of Artists. And the town’s art heritage can be traced back to the early Native American and Spanish settlers, which dates back over 1,000 years.

This year - September 23 through September 25 will be a weekend to celebrate all arts in Taos, NM. Set against the scenic landscape of the rich autumn foliage in the northern region of New Mexico, the Taos Grand Arts Weekend kicks off a festival that celebrates culture, fine arts and respect for the robust artistic community of Taos County. This special Grand Arts Weekend will have a number of signature events:

• The Fall Arts Festival begins on September 23 with a celebration of 37 years of fine art with an exhibition at the Taos Convention Center; visitors are also invited to attend a free opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. This year marks the 37th year of the Taos Arts Fall Festival and will, for the first time, feature the addition of the 2011 Distinguished Achievement Awards. • From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 24 people will get a unique behind-the-scenes look as 40 artists paint, sculpt, and carve at the Taos Center for the Arts’ Quick Draw event. The one-of-a-kind pieces will be on sale at a live auction. For more information, go to tcataos.org.
• The Harwood Museum of Art will host a special exhibit all weekend that explores Taos’ connection to Black Mountain College. For more information, go to harwoodmuseum.org.
• Working Class Theatre will perform “Art,” a play by Yasmina Reza at the Playhouse through September 29. For more information, go to workingclasstheatrenm.org
• From 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Sunday, September 25, The Solar Center will host the largest gathering of artists ever assembled in Taos at one time. Mingle with the artists and partake in the Solar Center’s Dance Party. A nationally and internationally sought after arts destination, Taos’ art community welcomes visitors and locals to enjoy the scenic landscape of changing Aspens and the numerous festivities that celebrate the visual arts, music, dance.
