Taos Ski Valley Declared the Highest Municipality in the US!
Taos, NM – June 14, 2011 – Taos Ski Valley's statistics make it the highest municipality in the nation. The Village of Taos Ski Valley base area elevation is 9,207 feet and the Village limits rise to elevations of 12,581 feet with the highest residential dwelling being at 10,350 feet.
Kachina Village, at over 10350 feet, houses the Bavarian Restaurant, two condominium complexes with 30 total units, and is home to six permanent residents. This area has master plans for 70-80 home sites for development .
Wheeler Peak, the tallest mountain in New Mexico at 13,161 feet, overlooks the village. Known for its world class ski resort, Taos Ski Valley, and our mountains also are an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise in summer. Summer in Taos Ski Valley is a welcome relief from the hustle and bustle or the high temperatures of city life. In the peak of the summer months temperatures rarely rise above 75.
Lodging in the valley ranges from hotel accommodations to private condos. Accommodations start at only $75 per night. The summer season officially begins June 30th with chairlift rides, which offer riders even higher elevations and remarkable views. From the top of the chairlife, there are unobstructed views of alpine peaks, abundant wildflowers and great trailes for hiking or biking.
The lift will run from 10 am to 4:30 pm Thursdays through Mondays. Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for children and can be purchased at Taos Ski and Boot, Co. There is always something happening in Taos Ski Valley during the summer months. Plan your trip around the exciting summer events including the 4th of July celebrations, Taos School of Music performances, Free guided Full Moon Hikes, Taos Mountain Music Festival, the Annual Oktoberfest, Motorcycle Trials or AMA Adventure Series ride.
For mountain biking enthusiasts, Taos Ski Valley hosts Frazer Mountain Madness- Mountain Bike race, with the highest hill climb in the US, and the challenging 10k Up and Over, beginning at 9,207 feet with a 2,612 feet elevation gain in the first three miles! Other activities include horseback riding, llama trekking, mountain biking, hiking, free disc golf, Volleyball, rock climbing and fly fishing tours.
